CRYPT1K / THE DELETED FOLDER CHALLENGE
Practice kit v1.0.0

These 100 files are disposable, fictional practice material. They contain no
personal information. The kit is about recovering file contents, not recovering
permissions, timestamps, encrypted volumes, applications, or a whole computer.

Start here: https://crypt1k.net/lab/recovery-drill/

1. Extract this ZIP into a NEW practice folder. Keep this README, manifest.json,
   verify.py, and print-checklist.html OUTSIDE the sample-data folder.
2. Check sample-data using the browser checker. It should show 100 of 100 matches.
3. Make a backup of sample-data with your chosen backup method. Use a separate
external drive if available. Check that the backup can be opened, then
disconnect the external drive until you are ready to restore.
4. Only after that check, manually delete ONLY the sample-data folder you just
extracted. Never use personal files for this experiment. Do not delete the
downloaded kit, manifest, verification tool, or your backup.
5. Restore into a NEW folder called restored-data. The contents should be the
documents, photos, data, and archives folders, rather than an extra enclosing
sample-data folder. Start a timer before restoration; stop when it finishes.
6. On the lab page select restored-data. The browser compares sizes and SHA-256
fingerprints locally. It does not upload files. Open a recovered document,
image, and data file yourself too.
7. Save the verification report and record your restore time, storage device,
backup method, and anything that failed. Open print-checklist.html to print
   a record sheet.

OPTIONAL COMMAND-LINE CHECK (Python 3.9 or newer)
From the extracted kit directory:
  python verify.py "C:\path\to\restored-data"
On some systems use python3 instead of python.
The verifier only reads files and prints JSON. Exit 0 means all contents match,
1 means differences were found, and 2 means the check could not run.

ROUND TWO / YESTERDAY'S VERSION
After preserving your original backup, change sample-data/documents/note-01.txt
in a separate working copy. Make another backup without overwriting your first.
Restore the ORIGINAL version into another new folder, and check it against the
original manifest. A sync service with no version history may keep only the edit.

IMPORTANT LIMITS
A matching hash verifies file bytes against this kit's manifest. It does not
prove that a backup will survive a failed drive, theft, ransomware, or a fire.
Keep the manifest with the kit, outside the practice folder and its backup.
There is deliberately no automatic deletion script in this download.
