First time underground?

You don’t need to vanish from the internet. Start by becoming less convenient to harvest.

Choose what matters

Start with the information or access you would most regret losing: family photos, your main email account, work files, or private messages. Decide what could realistically go wrong and how much effort you can sustain. Your plan should fit your circumstances.

Protect the account that unlocks the others

Begin with your main email. Use a unique password, enable additional authentication, and check your recovery details. Then repeat for your password manager and other important logins. The account security guide walks through this process without sacrificing recovery.

Make your important files recoverable

Choose a small folder you care about. Identify its separate backup and try recovering a sample file. If you want to run your own file service, use the personal cloud project plan and begin with disposable test data.

Understand before subscribing

A product should solve a problem you can describe. Read what a VPN can and cannot hide before deciding whether one belongs in your setup. If you want to explore AI on your own hardware, start with a small, repeatable local experiment.

Turn it into a routine

Use the digital independence checklist to choose your next action. Progress stays in your browser. Revisit it after changing a device, moving an account, or adding an important service. Checking every box is a record of actions, not a security rating.
